10 Common Bug and Insect Phobias

10 Common Bug and Insect Phobias

Most of us prefer to be as far away as possible from any sort of bug. They’re just a pest that we could happily live without. An aversion for bugs is usually based on three things: knowledge or experience (bees), a culturally understandable repulsion (cockroaches) or fear based on inadequate information (crickets).

For some this dislike of insects turns into something more serious: entomophobia (or insectophobia). A phobia can be defined as: “A persistent, abnormal, and irrational fear of a specific thing or situation that compels one to avoid it, despite the awareness and reassurance that it is not dangerous”.

A phobic person will experience overwhelming feelings of anxiety or even a panic attack when exposed to the insect they dread. Physical symptoms like sweating, trembling, hot flushes or chills, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, rapid heartbeat, nausea, dizziness, dry mouth and feeling disorientated can occur during an anxiety or panic attack. So you can see why a person with a phobia tries to avoid the insect they fear!

We’ve compiled a list of 10 of the most common insect phobias below:

  1. Fear of spiders. Probably the most common phobia when talking bugs. They just have too many legs and are way too quick on their feet.
  2. Fear of crane flies (also known as daddy long-legs). They don’t sting or bite, but those disproportionate gangly legs are just creepy.
  3. Fear of wasps and bees. Although they’re not aggressive towards humans, it sure doesn’t feel like it after you’ve been stung by one. Ouch.
  4. Fear of moths. Also completely harmless creatures, but those hairy little bodies that seem to have no sense of direction needn’t be anywhere near us please.
  5. Fear of ants. If encountering the right kind of ant they can actually hurt you. Ants contaminating food is also a reason for fearing them.
  6. Fear of flies. If you’re not a fan of this annoying pest, you might want to avoid watching ‘The Fly’ movie.
  7. Fear of cockroaches. They are fast, they fly, they are filthy, they are everywhere.
  8. Fear of crickets. Who knows how far they can jump with those ridiculously big thigh-muscles?
  9. Fear of mosquitoes. A fear that can actually be justified when spending time in a malaria or yellow fever-affected area.
  10. Fear of bed bugs. A common nuisance in shabby and less shabby hotels. Just thinking about them makes you itch.

We hope this list didn’t make you feel too uneasy. If you have a pest problem you need taken care of asap, get in touch.
